Cale Parks - N1

  • New York producer Cale Parks' past solo output (two albums and an EP in the mid-to-late '00s) has drawn criticism for being pleasant but unmemorable, and, in all honesty, N1 isn't the record to buck that trend. Primarily a percussionist, Parks is the drummer in indie band Aloha and has recording and live credits with the likes of White Williams, Yeasayer and Passion Pit to his name. On "N1," though, he explores an almost sleepy side of his musical personality. A slow and deliberate beat, wafting bass textures and echoing keys strive for grandeur, but it all comes out sounding too much like call centre hold music. Paris-based duo Paradis's remix is markedly different, with dreamy French vocals massaged into a far speedier beat and a high, fluttering synth line. Its only great point of similarity with the original is that it never rises above the level of inoffensive.
