Liston - Sleeper EP

  • With such strong scenes for dub, drum & bass, house, techno and hip-hop, it should come as little surprise that Leeds is overrun with electronic producers. Liston is the latest arrival on the block, and he's just dropped a six-track EP on the eclectic XVI Records. For the most part, Sleeper EP deals in low-slung electronica. Opener "Fauna," the EP's standout track, eases in on a beatless bed of escalating twinkles, with crisp kicks and a slinky bassline providing smouldering support. "Transformers" has a touch more bite, careering forward with punchy synths and electro-tinged stabs, before "Generations" reverts back to a dreamier state, as if Liston were wary of coming across too gritty. "Sleeper," with its balmy echoes and feather-light touches, tones things down further, cleansing the palette in preparation for the housier "Poppies" and "Something New." But, save for the track's beats, Liston sticks by his winning formula. Throwing in smooth vocal snippets and teary piano lines, he marks himself as one to watch for those who enjoy a cosy haze.
