Simon Baker - Arpy

  • The titles on Simon Baker's debut for the new label he's established with Geddes hardly fire the imagination, but the music itself can't be faulted for lack of vim. All four tracks, including Skudge's alternate take, are built on the same heavily disguised vocal sample. In the case of "Arpy 1," it's put on loop for almost the entire seven-plus minutes, acting as the cement for its building blocks of glowing arpeggios and a yawning bassline. "Arpy 2" is ostensibly a variation on a theme, its chief point of difference being a purring organ lick and snares that spit with intensity. The tightly coiled house of those two tracks is replaced by a lights out, locked-on groove from Skudge. The Swedish duo slap down acid drops, classic Detroit claps and a reverberating bassline, which sounds like a bodhrán being dismantled. It's the most understated and elegant of the four cuts on a solid, unfussy debut from NoFit State.
