Bedrock's 5th Birthday at Heaven, London

  • Bedrock returned to Heaven after a long summer break. John Digweed was playing as usual with the help of Josh Wink and Jay Tripwire in the main room. Unfortunately I turned up at around 11 to see Josh Wink take over from Jay Tripwire. Tripwire has been in form on the production front for the last year, so I was a little disappointed I didn’t get to see what he had to offer behind the decks breaking in the crowd for the potentially big night ahead. Josh Wink is another producer who has been in form over the last year or so. His amazing acid sound has been finding it way into the record boxes of a whole host of varying DJ’s. I had never seen him play before, but expected good things. When I turned up he was playing some very nice tech house, in with the trademark Wink sound. While Josh Wink played some great tracks, his programming lacked a little, with his set, at times, missing direction and flow. But despite this one thing is for sure, Josh Wink knows how to work a crowd. Some of the track that I noticed were; Hatrias - ‘Spaced Invaders’, Tom Mangan - ‘Chutney’ (Josh Wink Remix), Josh Wink - ‘Freak’ (used as a beepapella) and Josh winks classic ‘Higher State of Conciseness’ (which sent the crowd into a frenzy). At around 1am John Digweed took over. It had been nearly 18 months since I had last seen Diggers play live, and I was bubbling with expectation. Digweed played one of the most uplifting sets I have heard in recent times. He pushed the sound of progressive in its hey day. Gone are the days of dark, boring monotony, step forward the lighter, happier side to progressive. Diggers programming was second to none, always keeping it interesting. I recognised very little tunes, but wanted to know everything he played. Probably the biggest tune of the night was digger’s third last track. It was the new Sasha remix of Unkle. Amazing to hear and see the crowd react to this massive tune. Digweed then finished the night of with a great remix of Xpress 2’s ‘Music’. This is up there with my favourite night of the year so far, and Digweed’s set would definitely be contender for best set the year. I wait with anticipation for next months instalment, when Sasha and Digweed unleash a back to back assault, with support from Phil Thompson in the main room.
