DoubtingThomas - The Fall EP

  • Born from a brainstorming session at this year's Sonar festival in Barcelona, Catch Recordings is a new label from seasoned UK industry heads Rob Chadwick, Brett Sinclair and Johnny Cade. The inaugural, four-track release lands courtesy of French-born, London-based producer DoubtingThomas. Bar the final track, which vocalist Valentina CX transforms into a slice of electronic pop, The Fall EP presents a broad, understated approach to house and techno. Opener "Bite The Bullet" weighs in at almost nine and a half minutes, with no hooks or typically arresting moments. Instead, the emphasis is placed on the agility of the bassline, which is supported with hard-edged kicks and stirring, cobweb-thin pads. The result is surprisingly engaging. "Your Name Here" throws in a few more ingredients, laying faint chimes, poignant synths and sampled human chitchat over another rolling frame. "La Métamorphose" is a touch tougher, with a muffled cascade of uplifting shimmers fused with intermittent glitches and strewn across the EP's most driving (if still restrained) bassline. DoubtingThomas rolls within shorter, more song-like confines on the title track, combining Valentina CX's eerily dulcet flow with the record's dubby break. It might be the release's most immediately captivating track, but you'd be foolish not to give the rest of this EP the repeated listens it deserves.
