Julio Bashmore - Peppermint

  • The way a song is credited can have a major impact on how we process it. This latest Julio Bashmore transmission prominently features Jessie Ware, and were it credited to her, it would easily fit among her straightforward dance floor moments. But presented as a Bashmore track, "Peppermint" lacks his distinct flavour. "Peppermint" sounds like it was made to ride the wave of radio-ready vocal house sweeping the UK right now. Truth be told, if it weren't for Ware's presence, "Peppermint" would be entirely generic—the quirky bassline wiggle is the only thing recognizable as Bashmore. This isn't inherently a bad thing, but even Ware seems uninspired—her lyrics and "hot! hot! hot!" chants are so inane she might as well have avoided words altogether. With a hopelessly cheerful disposition, "Peppermint" is a hard track to hate, but it sounds like it was hastily thrown together at the end of a studio session—giddy and fun but ultimately insubstantial.
