Apes - Two Thousand Six / Cold Love

  • London producer Apes is co-head (with Seb Wildblood) of the Church imprint, which grew out of the Camberwell bass night of the same name. Having turned in remixes on several of the label's previous releases, this is his first solo EP, and it generally hits the mark, albeit in different ways. The warehouse techno clank and diva vocal snippets of "Two Thousand Six" will work well on the floor, but its lack of progression makes for a rather indifferent home listen. Chaos In The CBD's remix is deeper and more headphone-friendly, smothering the original's primary ingredients in a blanket of tender keys and echoing effects. "Cold Love" is, despite its title, far warmer, with unhurried, muffled percussion, pulsing bass and a woozy vocal sample swelling together to create a balmy, faintly nostalgic glow. Wildblood's remix isn't a million miles from the original, but has a slightly more direct percussive feel with some pretty keys added to the mix.
