Cardopusher & Neheun - Split 02

  • Cardopusher and Neheun's label is appropriately named—Classicworks' four EPs to date have taken their cues variously from old-school electro, Detroit techno and Chicago house. The fifth instalment is no trend-bucker. Both of Cardopusher's cuts are basement acid jams, with rolling 303s and drums that sound like they've been salvaged from a scrap yard. "Heatseeker" especially seems on the verge of breaking apart, its kicks and snares crumbling on each impact. Cerebral they ain't, but both tracks will tear a warehouse rave apart. Neheun is the more restrained of the pair. His tracks are hypnotic, not bludgeoning, with synths that churn in space rather than rattling against each other. The calmer cut, "Non Verbal Thinking," is a relief from Cardopusher's kitchen-sink approach to techno. Stabs burst over kicks that seem almost stuck together, a gloopy swamp beneath sky-brightening explosions. It's the kind of track you disappear into. "Mind Chats" is an assault on the eardrums that comes from a bassline pirouetting like a Catherine wheel and metallic clanks obscured by their brightness. Nothing here's likely to become a classic, but as throwaway party jams go they're precision-engineered.
