- Under a number of aliases, Atlanta artist Matt Weiner has shuttled back and forth between harsh digital tableaus, dark electronic pop and dancier grooves for some time now. With his TWINS project, he covers all those bases. "Love Runs Deep" opens with portentous synth stabs and subtle hi-hats, which Weiner overlays with throbbing dub stylings. With those foundations set, he takes us on an epic, paranoid trip lasting more than 11 minutes. Weiner frequently heads into cul de sacs and out again; down one is a conga workout, another ravey keys.
There are only glimpses of this delicate techno on "The Empty Deep," where Weiner all but eschews beats in favor of cotton wool percussion and twisted bass wrapped in ethereal voices. There are hints of DC downtempo doyens Thievery Corporation, so much so that it could be lifted from a late '90s chillout compilation. Despite its brevity, the EP is a fine showcase for Weiner's broad palette.
