- Given the dark aesthetic of Yør's captivating trio of EPs on Purple Maze, his graduation to the ranks of Créme Organization feels like a well-earned next step. It sounds right, too: this four-tracker from the young Hamburg producer sits comfortably alongside the label's vaults of banging, broken techno.
At the flick of a switch, "Lack Of Being" moves from a noisy swirl of 90 BPM desolation to pounding jackhammer kicks and early Aphex-style synth progressions. As noted by Philip Sherburne in 2011, melding two tracks into one has been a habit of Yør's since the beginning. At over 14 and a half minutes long, and cased in a film of distortion, it's a real brute of an opener. In this nonconformist spirit, the next two cuts—"Unbennant" and "Torn"—have a combined runtime of less than six minutes. The former marries a serpentine synth line to steady clicks and stomps, while the latter spins slamming drum breaks and celestial pads into a potent storm. It's only "Apophis" that is certified DJ-friendly, yet even then Yør's infectious bassline and darting melody are thrown off course by a second layer of percussion. The entire EP is a wonderfully uneasy listen.
