- If you haven't heard of the two artists featured on Laton's latest, you're forgiven—die-hard followers of the Austrian label might recognize them from a meager handful of releases over the last decade, but for the rest of us they're not names that jump off the page. F.R.U.I.T.S.'s "Dat 22 (First Track)" might tear a hole in your speakers, though—a tangle of percussion presages unrestrained and unrelenting bass pulses. On the right system, it could be a much-needed sonic massage for a sweaty crowd; on the wrong one, it might be the last record played before the bass bin blows.
On the flip, DJ Sotofett remixes "Tuesday Night" from PTU's 2009 album Hard Week. It's likely to be a new track to plenty of listeners, and Sotofett's mix is typically distinctive. Rather than tread into digi-dub or jungle like some of his other recent cuts, this remix is perfectly unpolished and profoundly pounding. The track moves through a few distinct phases—there's cold wave at the front, slamming techno at the back, and a sliver of ambient closing things out—but it still feels cohesive. And the transition between the two parts has the potential to kick the vibes up to the next level in a sweat-dripping basement. Whichever obscure side you play, there's nothing ambiguous about the effect—they're punishing in the best way possible.
