DJ Fett Burger & Luca Lozano - Hands Of Doom

  • DJ Fett Burger is a prolific collaborator—Sex Tags UFO, the Sex Tags Mania sub-label he operates, hasn't released anything but his work with others since 2012. It's lent impressive variety to his oeuvre, though his name on a sleeve generally denotes a monster anthem. Following on from tracky disco with Telephones and DJ Grillo Wiener, twisted house with DJ Speckgürtel and a sprinkle of '80s pop with Stiletti-Ana, Fett Burger's latest features Klasse Recordings boss Luca Lozano. It's another charmed pairing, and as you'd expect, both sides are about as big as underground, retro-referencing house can get. But even as it maintains a distinctly UFO feel, Hands Of Doom draws on rather different influences than its predecessors. Inflected with breakbeat-y drums, both sides offer a more epic take on the sound Fett Burger's brother, DJ Sotofett, has favored recently. "Totally Tangerine" is the biggest of the two, propelled by gregarious house synths and oodles of booty bass. When the shifty percussion arrives, it acts like a razorblade on the mix, slicing past the bombast to reveal the sublime groove within. Flipside "Electric Blue" has a nearly opposite structure: it's predominantly a heads-down, thickly rhythmic groove, with a synth-y liftoff punctuating the middle. Both cuts are as pleasurable as anything on UFO, but the latter feels unique for this label—a heavyweight tune with a perfectly light touch.
