Sleeper - Flatliner

  • With that simple 4/4 bass kick running over smooth syncs and deep exotic vocals. You had to know that Sleeper is doing something right. Some of you might remember Sleeper’s last single (My own Clouds LP) that drew the awesome title track with a sick dark breaks track on the flip. This year, Sleeper brings out more of the Tribal influences in him. The new single Flatliner is very much in tone with the previous release. The Original is a twisted deep progressive track for those of you who love the style that John Digweed, Matthew Dekay, Markus Schulz, or Sander Kleinenberg plays. The track starts nicely with the bass kick for a short sec and soon you hear the precision and vocal come in. Throughout the track, the 4/4 beat is met with moody beeps and minimal syncs. The vocals that come in every now and then fit perfectly into the atmosphere of the track. Using the first half of the track to build on the breakdown, Sleeper keeps the minimal effect going throughout the record as the original sets up for the more beefy b-side. The Flip gives into a more “up-tempo” feel. The track starts well and builds into a space carnival. With its low horns, very minimal 80’s style beeps, drum patterns, and smooth flow, the Lucid dreaming mix is defiantly more than the original. The vocals run longer together as a gateway for a quick breaks breakdown that helps keep the track interesting when it returns to its house roots. While the original feels more like a dub of the lucid dreaming mix, what Sleeper took from the original to create the flip is like adding sprinkles and a cherry to your hot fudge sundae. The original and lucid dreaming mix both move and flow steady and calm for most of the part. Even the breakdown is kept on par with the whole steady flow. Nevertheless, it’s the b-side where DJ’s will love. Both tracks are quality; you can’t go wrong with this release. Big ups to Sleeper for an excellent follow up from last years release and a solid release for Basic Energy in the New Year.
