Various - Chapter 2

  • This second Chapter compilation EP on Andrew Thomson's Glasgow-based Huntleys + Palmers label picks up where March's first installment left off: with effortless diversity from emerging artists. The company H+P is keeping here tells you plenty about the label's ever-growing stature, with contributions from affiliates of Studio Barnhus, Cómeme, Themes For Great Cities and Optimo Music, among others. Much-loved Glasgow collective Golden Teacher are a standout name, and their track doesn't disappoint. Lower-key than many of their other analogue noise assaults, it passes eight luscious but gloomy minutes with a pulsing bassline, primitive sci-fi pads and a shifting ensemble of improvised vocals. Elsewhere, Jan Schulte (resident at Düsseldorf's Salon Des Amateurs, H+P's "second home") appears under his Wolf Müller alias, giving us the invitingly acidic funk of "Rudeltanz." Swedish producer Oklo Gabon's "City Gym" evokes muscle-man Italo with little more than a rubbery bass groove and a few sprinkles of keys. Cómeme's Sano, meanwhile, turns in a gently howling slice of electro exotica called "Duraco." Studio Barnhus alumni Usio close things with the punchy, piano-led shimmer of "Galaxy," which may just be the pick of an impressive bunch.
