- Subwax, a Barcelona record store, distributor and label, have gone quietly about their business since relocating from Malmö, Sweden several years ago. Most of their effort has been in distribution, but their small roster of labels continues to prosper and evolve. This release from Asférico—as interesting as it is well-crafted—will certainly do them no harm.
The A-side is a 22-minute segment of a longer 34-minute piece that's available on CD, and the first of four such works from Alex Gámez, the man behind the Störung label and its annual festival of experimental music. The Asférico project has previously been focussed on ambient and drone pieces with an ear for sound design rather than DJ tracks, but the two combine brilliantly here. The results are reminiscent of Voices From The Lake, but with perhaps more tendency towards ambient and dub. Although "Serie 1" does get up a fair head of steam in the middle, it's more for close listening than peak time. But on the B-side are 20 loops of hypnotic, Prologue-esque techno that would serve as great DJ tools.
