Gabe Gurnsey - Falling Phase

  • The importance of drummer Gabe Gurnsey's role in Factory Floor makes it a little surprising that this two-tracker for Richard Fearless's Drone label marks the first time he's applied his unmistakable rhythmic vision to a solo record. Gurnsey's influence has always been of central importance to the band's sound, a point underlined by the fact that the title track here sounds exactly like you'd hope a new Factory Floor cut would, right down to its guest vocal from bandmate Nik Void. Like the best Factory Floor tracks, "Falling Phase" is funky and muscular. Void's chrome-plated vocal features most prominently early on, after which the track is driven by bass down a rabbit hole. It's a mesmerising cut that could have worked without Void's vocal but is definitely improved by it. "Partaloa" is the record's junior partner, but its slow-build mosaic of clattering percussion, rolling drums and a stuttering bassline still packs a serious punch. Fans of Factory Floor should lap this record up.
