Maceo Plex - Solar Sampler

  • Eric Estornel's forthcoming second album as Maceo Plex, Solar, is about his newborn son, who it's also named after. Such a premise could translate to the classic "domestic bliss" record, the kind that's usually softer, happier and more introspective than what came before it. And judging from its first single, Solar could very well be that. Solar Sampler presents one of the weepier tracks in Estornel's Maceo Plex catalog. "Wash Away My Tears" sounds melancholic with its post-punk guitars and downtrodden bassline. Throw in the vocoder, and it's like a complete inversion of, say, Skream's fatherhood anthem, "Anticipate." It's an attractive enough track, but the vocals hit it like a wet blanket, making it more of a ham-fisted attempt at "serious" music. "Solar Detroit," on the other hand, was apparently inspired by Estornel's recent trip to Movement with his son. Unabashedly cheesy, it's nine minutes of throbbing techno, with rimshots that burst like fireworks and a white noise climax that'd make Dubfire double fist-pump. And that energy mostly works in its favor: "Solar Detroit" doesn't have the measured approach of its counterpart, but it does sound far more celebratory.
