Lawrence Le Doux - Pollution

  • With last year's Terrestre EP, Laurent Baudoux embarked on a new direction of house. Well, perhaps that's oversimplifying things—the Belgian producer's music remained as whimsical and leftfield as ever, even as it indulged in a 4/4 pulse. His return to Vlek picks up where the most low-key parts of that record left off. Lead track "Floor" demonstrates how Baudoux has toned down his wayward tendencies for a sleeker, more linear feel, not to mention how neatly he's pulled it off. The track's splashing spring reverbs and lisping hi-hats evoke falling into a soft sofa after a hard night of dancing. "Liquide" follows a similar formula, though its charms are buried a bit too deep beneath its woolly synths. A stronger melodic sense perks up the EP's second half. "Pollution," with its fluid lead line, enters weepy IDM territory. After a while, the synth drifts away for a drum coda so downcast it falls face-first into its soup. "Story" dispenses with the drums, with its cute guitar twangs nodding to Baudoux's activities outside of house. He's good at that stuff, too, but it's when he sets his sights on the dance floor that quiet sparks fly.
