Circadian Rhythm - Chateau EP

  • With its latest EP, Junk Yard Connections has dropped a strict vinyl-only policy to present its first digital release in five years. At this point, that’s less of a bold move than a practical one, but what to make of a record created entirely on a smartphone? With the press release dropping words like "democracy" and "revolution," expectations couldn't be pitched higher for newcomer Circadian Rhythm's debut effort. But in the end, Chateau never comes close to such summits. To be clear: Chateau isn't a bad record. There are some nice '90s touches here and there (is that "You're Not Alone" on "Cynabal"?) and "404" is about as lush and laid-back as it gets. Naked's remix of "Reef" serves more of a late-night function than the rest—it's fine background music, but that's hardly revolutionary. Junk Yard Connections is right about good music not correlating with big budgets, but still, something's adrift here.
