Neville Watson - Night Of The Inflatable Muscle Heads EP

  • Judging from the tracklist and title, it's easy to tell that Neville Watson is out to take gym rats down a notch on his Night Of The Inflatable Muscle Heads EP. Tunes like "Deep Vee Douche" and "M8, Do You Even Squat?" bring together their simple acid scribbles and boom-clap beats in such an unfussy way that it borders on regressive. But in the hands of a seasoned vet like Watson those classic sounds make for streamlined structures as lean and sturdy as the image-conscious people they jab at. Though the heavy-footed "Creatine Cretin" and low-key "M8, Do You Even Squat?" do well playing with their inflexible arrangements, it's the loping title track that dazzles the most. The bassline in "Night Of The Inflatable Muscle Heads" would stoke tempo-hungry dance floors alone, so when paired with its garage-y beat and tweaked vocal blips the track's a bonafide firestarter. Watson gradually builds the acid-laced energy of "Deep Vee Douche," but the uncharacteristically dramatic house jam gets rolling soon enough. It's full of chintzy strings, low-end bloops and rollicking rhythms, all of which interchange with no obvious arc or direction. Lively and engaging as it is, the track illustrates both Watson's strengths and weaknesses. Of course the guy knows his hardware and can draw plenty of satisfying sounds from the machines, but arranging them with any dynamic purpose seems to be an afterthought.
