HOM - HOM002

  • House Of Mora's debut was dance music of painterly precision, but it had an austerity that, for DJs, might've felt too self-contained. HOM002 is a bit warmer and sometimes recalls vintage Ron Trent. It expresses more than its predecessor, and yet stays reluctant to over indulge itself. That restraint may be less about sounding pretty than providing a way to highlight the intricate, fragile percussion. "Too Far Gone"'s tambourines and woodblocks, familiar elements from House Of Mora, are joined by wispy pads and a boogie synth, and the combination sizzles. "Unathi (Experianza Version)" reintroduces the Latin-Cuban influence of HOM001, marrying it to a vocal chant and bassline whose likeness to classic Prescription house is tastefully rendered. Another version of the same track, "Unathi (Haute Couture Euphoria Mix)," employs a more buoyant bassline under light piano loops and a straining flute solo, but even these flamboyant touches feel tantalisingly out of reach.
