Drax - The 3rd Decade

  • "Holy cow!" was my immediate response to "Acid Brick," one of the best-named tracks of the year. It's a remorseless, corrosive wallop that rockets into being and hurtles along at high speed for its duration. Seven and a half minutes might be a little longer than average, but time is rendered meaningless at such reckless velocities. Propulsion is the key here, and "Acid Brick" is about as driving as driving gets. But with all those acid fluxes going on, it's more of a breakneck roller coaster ride than a straight launch into the stratosphere. You'll be sweaty and white-knuckled by the end of it, and likely clamouring for a second run. There's more of that intensity on The 3rd Decade, the first original material from Drax (AKA Thomas Heckmann) since 2002. Teaming a sort of electro swing with Perc's industrial familiarities, "Razorblade" gives you a lot more leeway than its predecessor. This time, there's build and a more obvious progression, but once it hits, that strike is no less forceful in lashing you to the groove. "Low Machine" tries a different approach: a barefaced electro track of the dark and haunted variety. Despite hints of Aux 88 and Drexciya genealogy, Drax keeps the thing from sounding overtly retro.
