Pris - Unbeknown01

  • Since Pris's breakout record, Unbeknown To Us, both he and his Resin label have gained considerable momentum. Resin is working towards its tenth release, doing a decent job of unearthing fresh talent—Metrist, Divided and Perth Drug Legend (Liam Robertson from Clouds' sludgy solo project)—in the process. Meanwhile, Pris has maintained his own limber profile. He closed out 2015 with a podcast for Slam, and got in touch with his moodier side earlier this year on an EP for Avian. Now, he's launched a new white-label series named after his first release. Unbeknown01's A-side is robust and familiar. "Draconian" is a prime example of Pris's updated industrial style: it's a little rusty sounding but also has a sheen as it swings like a pendulum. "Hunger" is a growling and groovy number with plenty of oomph, but things get more interesting on the flip. "A Sense Of Purpose" sounds like marbles rattling around in a box. "Margaux" is a scuzzy, droning swell that could've found a home on Downwards. Same goes for "Sinking," though it's more positive and has a soundtrack vibe. We've heard Pris take things off the dance floor before, but nothing with the same impact as these final moments.
