Josh One – Midnight Samba

  • Californian based record label, Rhythm Recordings, returns to action for their second release, and they call upon the services of Josh One of ‘Contemplation’ fame to deliver the goods with his Midnight Samba. The package also comes armed with remixes from Up, Bustle & Out who add their eclectic touch to the release. First up on the a-side is the Original Mix. Combining elements of broken beat as well as smooth house undertones and a soulful vocal, the original mix is a smooth production with a strong jazz element. Smooth piano lines as well subtle guitar riffs are the highlights of this track that maintains a smooth flow throughout. Following this is the Up, Bustle & Out Full Mix, and from the word go this mix is a little more upbeat. The percussion is definitely a strong point of this mix, and the vocal also stands out quite well in this mix. The Up, Bustle & Out Instrumental is first up on the flip, and it has a strong latin feel to it throughout. Soothing piano lines, bubbly percussive interludes, and cheeky little guitar riffs make this track what it is. For me the Up, Bustle & Out Dub is a real highlight of the release. The funky baseline is very nicely worked alongside the piano lines and the tangy vibes, all while the beats roll along smoothly throughout. Smooth. Smooth and jazzy this release is, with a big part played by the Up, Bustle & Out boys. Their dub mix especially compliments the original mix quite nicely to make this release quite solid.
