Divided - Black Swallower / Interzone

  • Project 13's credentials are well known in Manchester, where their events have been delivering on-point lineups—spanning footwork, jungle, grime, techno and bass—for the last five-odd years. And their label has been developing just as nicely, with a series of techno-based releases from resident Acre, Divided and Szare, all of which sound anything but routine. For Project 13's fourth offering, Divided steps up again, his approach to broken techno sounding more streamlined. "Black Swallower" still swings, but now with rusty hydraulics and squealing metal FX that sound closer to industrial than anything else. "Interzone" switches to a bouncy pace—it's an incremental shift but enough to make it the most functional Project 13 tune to date. Divided's use of cheeky film samples in both tracks evokes Horsepower Productions, pointing to the dark garage and nascent dubstep roots that have always influenced Project 13.
