Zone 6 - Energize

  • Number 4 from Bill Vega & New Intent's Full Intent Imprint sees the boys cross the Atlantic and land in Texas to capture Bless Records' Son Of The Electric Ghost for a remix. Side A. Energize The original version is another bass driven monster from the Full Intent crew. Squelchy acid bass melodies and big breakbeats give the track its flavour and it's topped off with robotic vocal samples, techy electro stabs and occasional synth hooks (especially prevalent during the breakdowns). Personally though I didn't find this too exciting compared with their previous releases - that bass line gets a bit monotonous at times. Side B> Energize (SOTEG Remix) From what I've heard from the Bless Records artists, they've got a sound that sits somewhere in between Tipper and Future Funk Squad - a freakish hybrid of beats and bass with plenty of tweaks, tech stabs and bass manipulations with crisp snares and thumping pads. SOTEG takes Energize to that level, separating itself in some ways from the original tune - adding in extra percussive elements and transforming the bassline to give it a darker feel. SOTEG adds in some squelchy acid hooks with plenty of buildups especially during the breakdowns - it's an acid assault on the eardrums with a rumbling bass drop during the middle - I guess that's how they do it in the Texas desert! After hearing tunes like Running Scared and Give Me A Break, I was slightly disappointed with this - maybe it's just not my thing. Hopefully, they'll blow me away with their next release.
