Clubkelly - Clubkelly EP

  • Clubkelly's debut EP for Crazylegs expands on a micro-genre invented by the label with dJJ's single from last year. It's sample house, essentially, with a scuzzy DIY approach and an addictive pop edge. As with "Just A Lil," this EP's four tracks make up in energy and melodic flair what they lack in full-frequency clarity. There are some differences between dJJ and Clubkelly, though: the latter's sound is more excessive, his drums thunderous and his sample-loops sliced and filtered to the edge of oblivion. The feel of each track here varies depending on the sample. On the brilliant "UDDS," it's a swooning sax, straining to be heard over a tumult of distorted percussion. "TOOL" and "UMA" focus on diva cries; the latter has the most jubilance packed into its looped "ooh baby"s, and the most dramatic drop. (Clubkelly loves a good drop, for which he deploys brutal lo-pass sweeps and extravagant drum edits.) Only "MITSUKI," with its limper pop sample, is less than explosive.
