DJ Python - ¡Estéreo Bomba! Vol. 1

  • DJ Python is the alter-ego of DJ Wey, real name Brian Piñeyro. According to Proibito—Anthony Naples' label—he's also "arguably NYC's first deep reggaeton artist." The genre descriptor may be tongue-in-cheek, but it's not totally wrong: ¡Estéreo Bomba! Vol. 1 makes clever use of reggaeton's rhythmic building block—the dembow beat. Where reggaeton is shiny and bombastic, however, these tracks seem to peak out from behind a cloud of fog. They're swimming in a bath of reverb and delay, though the snappy drums keep them from feeling drowned out. "Tranquila" is endearingly off-kilter. It's built around a beat that loops slightly wrong, though the groove clicks into place as it grows into a latticework of rhythmic layers. On "Cuidado," Piñeyro channels the submerged sound of fellow New Yorker Ital (who released his debut DJ Wey EP). The bassline adds just the right amount of funk, allowing the same groove to loop for seven minutes without getting old. "Sunset Drive" is the standout track for DJs. Like the rest of the EP, it's grounded by a thick layer of sub-bass—the anchor that keeps these hazy tracks from floating away.
