Waitress - Copy 2

  • Waitress's debut EP for Tape Archive was a lo-fi club record with an Afro-Caribbean twist. It was the sound of carnival, of cocktails beside gently lapping shores, all reconfigured to suit a heavy-lidded, late-night shuffle on a humid dance floor. It had moody, retro appeal, but it was mostly the unique rhythms that made the music pop. The same goes for Waitress's follow-up, Copy 2, which consolidates his quasi-tribal techno in a similarly dreamy vein. The most endearing thing about "Lost (Mind Spinning In The Backyard Mix)" is its lightness. Kicks and hand percussion keep the ten-minute track ticking over, as other details creep in and out, but the overall feel is weightlessness, with a pastel melody that breezes through the final third. The idiosyncratic percussion of Copy 1's untitled B2 returns on "Ravus (Sarajevo Mix)", which pitches metal against metal, rattling tin against digital FX. An acid bassline, a xylophone, vintage synth stabs and deep pads all come together on "The End '99," a bemusing but affecting combo.
