Various - RKS Allstars Vol. 6

  • In 2008, Roska launched his label to release his own UK funky tracks. While that was enterprising in itself, it also gave him an outlet to keep developing the genre, even after most had deserted it. The sound got a bit of a revival last year, thanks largely to Drake's "One Dance," but Roska Kicks & Snares has been keeping it real all along. For Allstars Vol. 6, Roska is joined by Majora and Murder He Wrote, two artists he worked and played with regularly in 2016. Roska's contribution, "We Come Correct," has a spareness to it, something we might associate with grime or dubstep, but with the percussive palette and syncopation of UK funky, which is mostly about the snares. Murder He Wrote's "Watch The Tempo" features a series of changes. It goes from dreamy house, to grimy half-step and to the most classic-sounding UK funky beat of the lot, all by changing up the drums. But the most intriguing track has to be Majora's "Fire Water," if only for the low-slung, propulsive energy that creates a dark mystique. As a snapshot of the genre, Allstars Vol. 6 shows how flexible funky has become.
