Waynette - Eraser On The Dancefloor

  • Eraser On The Dancefloor is the debut record of Berlin-based artist Waynette Posch. When I emailed her recently, she told me she'd been DJing and making music for a decade before meeting Soren Jahan—who co-runs the Supply label with John Barera—while working at a bar. "I remember the first evening I showed him my music," she said, "the funniest and weirdest tracks." Eraser On The Dancefloor sounds like the work of a strong personality. Working across several styles—techno, electro, house—the album's tracks are bold yet simply constructed. The same could also be said of, say, early Omar-S 12-inches. Some shared qualities are worth noting: interlocking grooves, gritty sound and a big impact drawn from just a few elements. They're danceable tracks that never feel over-produced. Eraser On The Dancefloor is sometimes funny and weird in the way Posch described, but it's not too out-there. Across various club-friendly styles, her individual voice emerges. Eraser On The Dancefloor gets more intense as it goes, though its path upwards is more of a zig-zag than a straight line. The title track, drizzled with Posch's whispers, is a mysterious and slightly trippy opener. The following track, "Gentle," has a completely different charge—tart and playful, it has a buzzer sound on every beat. Attitude is another important part of Posch's music. Eraser On The Dancefloor's final A-side track, "Wake Up New Life," captures this best. It's a snappy hybrid of electro and techno with chopped vocals and booming kick-clap percussion. There's also a memorable line from Posch, who sings: "I woke up and I realized / that I love my life." The drum pattern is equally likely to stay stuck in your head. Eraser On The Dancefloor's club sounds, whether sweet or aggressive, suggest considerable craft. Speaking about the album's range, Posch said: "This was really important for me because as a DJ I play techno, and I wanted to show the world my little secret I kept for years." At the moment, Posch herself is a secret as well, but after such a modest and striking debut, she may not remain one for long.
