Patrice Scott - Soulfood

  • There's a cool tribal flavour to "Soulfood," the A-side of Patrice Scott's latest EP. The US producer's usual bag of tricks—pads, meaty chords, swirling synths—are matched with unusually upbeat percussion (for deep house, at least) that recalls the sun-kissed grooves of early West Coast tech house labels like Siesta Records and Jump Recordings. This Latin flair is tough to find in Scott's catalogue, which favours dense mood and atmosphere over rhythm. But "Soulfood" is still a mellow cut, so don't expect it to lift people out of their chairs. Instead, use it to set the scene. The B-side holds two tunes in a more familiar style. The straightforward percussion is based around thumping kick drums, which, on "Instant Gratification," are paired with shakers, piano keys and a revolving cast of synth riffs. "Feels So Good" has some of the A-side's Latin tinge, but its stomping kick drum soon overpowers the delicate details on top. There are plenty of melodic components at play, but there's little we haven't heard from Scott before. This EP is all about the A-side—if you find yourself behind the decks outdoors this summer, make sure "Soulfood" is in your bag.
