DJ Fett Birger - Rook On Remixes And Bogos

  • At the end of 2015, a new record store called Sound Metaphors opened on a quiet street in Kreuzberg, Berlin, selling ambient, jazz and reggae along with the usual house and techno. Since then, they've expanded their operation to include a label, Sound Metaphors Records, which over the last year reissued two scuzzy gems of underground club music: DJ Dove's God 'O Mighty and Instinct's Mindsearch. Now they've moved into the realm of new music with Rook On Remixes And Bogos, an EP by Sex Tags cofounder DJ Fett Burger (listed here, for some reason, as DJ Fett Birger). Having said that, the best track here is not exactly new. "Kokken Tors Jævla Sensualitet Mix (Lang Versjon)" is an extended take on a remix Fett Burger did last year of a track called "Speil-egg," a fine bit of modern disco by the Norwegian artist Olefonken, whose misty pads might be the only thing that made it through to this version. It makes sense to give this track a proper A-side release. Long, lazy and kick drum-free, it's a near-perfect manifestation of the balearic kitsch that's a cornerstone of Fett Burger's sound, complete with psychedelic hand percussion and the sound of the surf rolling in. The B-side offers more straight-forward club jams. "N.Y. Venus A Mix" is a sunny house track with the kind of winding, unpredictable arrangement that's becoming a Fett Burger hallmark (a la his remix on Club No-No from last year). The stripped down "Bogos Bonus Beats" version does pretty much what it says on the tin. As DJ tools they're nice enough, but after that ultra-lush A-side, you might wish they had more of Fett Burger's offbeat flair.
