DMX Krew ‎- The Wiggly Worm

  • If you couldn't tell by the title, Edward Upton gets weird on The Wiggly Worm, his new EP for Super Rhythm Trax. A sidestep away from his trademark boogie-inspired electro sound into more psychedelic terrain, it finds Upton in a mood that highlights his music's hypnotic side. The tracks are still fun, but they're deeper than usual, landing closer to house than electro. It's a welcome move from Upton, whose releases tend to draw from a narrow range of funked-up beats. The title track is among the producer's housiest tunes. It's subtler than most of his other work, but that classic DMX Krew cheer is there, heard in the track's elastic bassline and plodding melodies. "Old Groove" has drum rolls, organ synths and an easygoing pace, while the bleepier "Grand Tour" feels more introspective thanks to its classic deep house melody. A hammering kick drum makes "Death Blip" the toughest track on the disc, but a snaking bassline keeps the groove rolling. It rounds off an EP that shows a producer looking outside his signature sound.
