Slacker – What A Dream / Goodnight Clocks

  • The name Slacker should be very familiar to many by now. First making a big impact with ‘Scared’ which enjoyed commercial success, the duo has now become one, that being Shem McCauley. And Shem has been very busy in the last year or so, with productions such as ‘Looky Thing’ again putting the name Slacker in the limelight. He returns now to his beloved Jukebox in the Sky imprint to deliver a 3 tracker which again has the trademark Slacker sounds. First up on the a-side is the Promo mix of What a Dream. Expect the usual chunky beats and deep reverberating baselines from this track, as well as some very quirky and raw percussive sounds. The track builds nicely towards an intricate breakdown, which features nice soothing sounds as well as a delicate vocal sample. The beats then regain control and take this track out in style. Following this is the Novo mix of What a Dream. A little more dark and sinister then the Promo mix, this version features more low end rumbles and sounds. However, many of the elements that made the Promo mix what it was, still remains, such as the percussive and baseline elements. There is a noticeable lack of the vocal samples however. Goodnight Clocks is on the flip and the pace quickens up slightly with intense drum patterns building the track alongside a deep penetrating baseline. Nice melodic and atmospheric effects give the track a nice aura as it builds and in the breakdown, and to be honest the track has quite an intense flow throughout, as well as the quirky nature of the trademark Slacker production. A pretty solid release here by Shem, and with many more productions in the works, it seems as though the Slacker name will live on for a long time.
