- A considered experimental release that could use some more flair.
- It's an important time for many of the young producers who came to disrupt the club a few years back. As descendants of Fade To Mind and GHE20G0TH1K, these artists and labels present a newer, straighter generation of young electronic punks. Toxe, AKA Tove Agélii, first appeared with brutal mashups of disjunctive samples, where metal and melodic rock collided with pop and dance. On 2015's "Xic," the Swedish producer bludgeoned Britney Spears' "Toxic" with juddering beats, mutilated vocal snippets and samples of shattering glass. It was a weird, dystopian aesthetic with the underripe edge of an artist still in her teens.
Three years later, Blinks pulls back on that aggression–effective as it may have been—and applies something more reflective. On "Honey Island," explosive and arrhythmic beats are replaced with melodic synth echoes. The hysterical collisions of chaotically contrasting tracks are now overwritten with the sonic world-building of "Perfect 2," where a nervous rhythm moves through a three-dimensional space that's brimming with samples and buoyant sonic objects. It's a different sound for Agélii—more mature perhaps, but not as exciting.
