- The right bassline can turn the spaciest of tracks into funky bombs, which is what we get with "Kirkisland," a six-minute tune on Thilo Dietrich's EP for HardWorkSoftDrink. The sounds—twinkling synths, bleeps and the occasional pad—are the kind of things we hear on a few new records every week, but that bassline, a slapping twang that weaves between the beats like a featherweight boxer, is one-of-a-kind. These types of basslines now seem to be the sole property of post-minimal producers like Dietrich, who are remoulding house, techno and electro into new forms.
The EP's other selections are similarly cosmic. Running for almost ten minutes, "Othello" is long for a track of its type, bouncing along with another modulating bassline and more soft-focus pads and synths. "Wave And Curle Keeper (Hotjam)" is more energetic, bringing a sense of chaos to the EP. There are vocals that sound plucked from a video game's boss level, along with random bleeps and a few breakdowns. Use this track to mess with minds. Use the others to make dancers sweat.
