  • VBX, who've repeatedly booked DJs like Ricardo Villalobos, Zip and Sonja Moonear, is the best-known minimal outfit in Amsterdam. Ferro is one of its four main residents, specialising in a slick and functional style that feels inspired by the likes of Raresh and Villalobos, DJs who favour steadily flowing sets with plenty of percussive flair. The same goes for his productions. Heavy on bass and without much melody, Ferro has released a handful of solo EPs since debuting in 2014, none of which stray from the so-called "Romanian sound" that, up until a few years ago, dominated the scene. We get two more of these tracks on the I Change, Just Like You EP, the fifth release on VBX Music. As minimalists associated with labels like Cabaret Recordings and Time Passages have looked to electro and techno for inspiration, others have stuck with the shuffling percussion, gloopy sub-bass and angelic vocals favoured by producers like DeWalta and Cristi Cons. Ferro has also stayed put, which means the tracks on I Change, Just Like You won't do much for anyone interested in more adventurous minimal offshoots. That said, these are considered tracks best heard at some daytime session where people should have gone home hours ago. ("Endresonic" seems to work especially well for Raresh in this video.) I Change, Just Like You pushes a familiar sound that, after more than a decade in the spotlight, still moves dance floors.
