  • There's an oversupply of radio DJs these days, but very few traditional hosts. NTS's Charlie Bones is a notable exception, having built a dedicated following by showing up nearly every weekday morning for the past six years with banter and a broad selection of records. If you tune in to the Do!! You!!! Breakfast Show, you might hear The Korgis, Cocteau Twins, Durutti Column, John Martyn, Kenny Larkin or Drake. His craft revolves around finding the right tune for the moment, regardless of obscurity or popularity, and letting it ride. I've gone on with Charlie on a couple of mornings and witnessed firsthand his ease on the mic, his loose, broad approach to DJing and the active online chat that keeps him company 15 hours a week. Regular listeners give feedback on nearly every track. If they don't like it, they'll let him know—quickly. This, along with his good taste, gives Bones an enormous leg-up with his new label. The first record consists entirely of "Readers WAVs," the cheeky name he's given to listener submissions. In other words, this is music submitted and approved by Do!! You!!! listeners. It's also great music to take in with your first cup of coffee or that first e-mail from your boss. New York City scene stalwart Bryce Hackford lays Patrick Adams-style synth solos in between a massive chorus on his edit of Revanche's "You Get High In N.Y.C.," while Seiji Ono's original, "Celebrate Your Life," could be an Adams production. Its final synth flourish playfully references Todd Terje but the musicianship dwarfs the Norwegian star's. The EP's centerpiece is Dog & Fox's "Who Gets The Cows," which sounds a bit like Electric Counterpoint-era Steve Reich trying his hand at dubstep. A pitched up sample asks the deep questions: "Is this it? Is there more? Will I ever feel that thing again?" and, finally, "Who gets the cows when I die?" It's unexpected and affecting, just like a typical Bones selection.
