  • Roy Of The Ravers makes big tunes. From "Emotinium" to "En Trance 10," Sam Buckley's best tracks spiral for upwards of ten minutes, wringing every ounce of feeling from their potent hooks. But the first track on SE1 Acid Pt. 1, the first release on a new label called Winthorpe Electronics, is a brief, wiry blast of energy, less than four minutes of jagged acid and writhing beats. The off-the-cuff feel is exhilarating in a different way, which makes "SE1 Acid Pt. 2," a spry but repetitive jam clocking in at the usual ten minutes, feel stiff in comparison. You should also turn to the 13-minute "1999" on the B-side. Armed with globs of acid that swim like jellyfish, it pulls you in with its big textures. Buckley teases a hands-in-the-air melody somewhere between Eric Prydz's "Opus" and Martyn's "We Are You In The Future," letting it linger for longer each time. The track sinks into pure bliss when the delayed gratification hits.
