- Psychedelic industrial at slow tempos.
- Are you a DJ who likes to mess with crowds? Do you enjoy toeing the line between a pleasurable experience and a potentially unsettling one? Well, here's a track for you. "Lost," by the Serbian producer Stevie Whisper, real name Stefan Unkovic, a disgustingly slow and psychedelic chugger that's layered with someone screaming the letters of the English alphabet. At first I thought the vocals were too much, but then I imagined this playing on some dark, dingy dance floor—maybe Drugstore, the former Belgrade slaughterhouse where Stevie and his label do club nights. The first two minutes feel like a bad trip, with thick, sludgy bass and glitchy flourishes like auditory hallucinations, but then the screaming comes in. It's easy to imagine the weird dissonance of everybody slow-dancing through their confusion.
There's quite a bit of screaming on Stevie Whisper's Donkey Milk, the second release on his label, Yes Belgrade. Right around the two-minute mark on "Public Homage Ltd.," the beat drops out and we hear the sound of someone taking a massive rip off some kind of pipe, followed by a harrowing scream that could also be a chainsaw or a velociraptor. Then the track comes back in with an industrial techno beat that oozes along at 90 BPM.
"The Crying Wolf" sounds like an '80s acid record played on 33 RPM instead of 45, while "Lavender" and "White Button" have a post-punk flex that comes from the crunchy guitar lines. "Cloughie" sounds like post-punk genre pastiche, but the good kind. It's one of only two tracks that break the 95 BPM mark. With such low tempos, it will be fun figuring out how and where to play this record.
