  • Much of Andreas Werner's catalogue from the last 15 years is, in the European sense of the word, distinctly minimal. Inventive, restrained and a touch goofy, his earliest records on Perlon, Trapez Ltd and Hartchef Discos, which he co-founded in 2004, capture what was best about the mid-2000s era. His sound reflects how the scene shifted throughout the years, as classic house tropes crept in as the decade progressed. More recently, Werner settled further into a warm house zone that has a wider appeal than his roots might indicate. But WRNR222 makes much less use of vintage New York and Chicago house tropes. "Floating" comes off like a modern, minimalistic take on late '90s UK tech house, recalling Silverlining with its wispy, swishing high-end and perfectly nimble bassline. "Filled In Later" initially lands in a Baby Ford circa Basking In The Brakelights zone before another UK tech house-sized bassline storms in, creating a more powerful yet relaxed feel. Judging by its quirky samples and a meandering yet crowd-pleasing bassline, Werner could have made "Bass Games" ten years ago. This style has been rediscovered by younger DJs, long after many in artists in the scene it came from have moved on. It rewards being approached with a fresh set of ears.
