  • In 2014, Ryan Elliott said that he's always seen himself as a DJ before anything else. After building his career in his hometown of Detroit, Elliott moved to Berlin in 2009 and has spent most of the last decade as a resident at Berghain / Panorama Bar, one of the only residents to play regularly on both floors. His productions have largely been an appendage to his DJ career, but there are signs that this is changing. Paul's Horizon, released on Ostgut Ton in May, was his first solo record in six years. Now he's launching his own label, Faith Beat, with an EP of his own music. Faith Beat's musical mission statement is "subtlety, nuance and groove with a focus on meticulously crafted club tools." Elliott's music, whether as a DJ or producer, has always blurred the line between house and techno, often combining the groove of house music and the tense linear structure of techno. His productions reflect his DJing experience—you can imagine him breezing through these tracks with ease, hours into a long set in his signature, fast mixing style. The only moment that offers something a little different is "The Introduction," which (as the name suggests) would be a great opener or mid-set breather, with stripped-back percussion and trippy, organic hardware sounds. The rest will probably get plenty of club play, but they could've used more of that same inspiration.
