- Romance meets chaos on this reggaeton-laced EP.
- Florentino's work has always toed the line between the melancholy and the furious. Early records on the Manchester-based label and club night Swing Ting tended towards the latter, deploying noisy percussion alongside the more familiar winding rhythms of reggaeton. Last year's Fragmentos EP, Florentino's second outing for Mixpak, saw the UK-Colombian producer consolidating a softer side, making good on his tag as "el más romántico de los románticos" ("the most romantic of the romantics").
Ilimitado unites the two sides of Florentino's musical identity, its hybrid approach captured on the EP's cover. That drama spills over into "Na Fuga," as the baile-funk star MC Bin Laden and Barcelona's MC Buzzz tumble over a baile beat embellished with tense, grime-esque violin stabs. "Latigo" maintains Florentino's focus for the dance floor, pairing a wobbling, elastic bassline with fluttering drums and occasional shattering glass. Elsewhere, the sweet, romantic melodies of his delicate synths soundtrack more intimate moments. The reggaeton artist Albany croons longingly on the lovely albeit bittersweet "Dime Tu Quieres," while Isabella Lovestory explores darker themes of toxic love and torment on the cumbia-inflected "Catastrofe." Ilimitado, which translates to "unlimited," evokes the brevity, intensity and wide-ranging emotions of a summer relationship. But while Florentino is a self-affirmed romantic, his productions are grounded by a watchmaker's eye for detail.
