- Add some drums to a simple vocal hook and you might have a 2019 summer smash. Take Patrick Topping's "Turbo Time," or Roberto Surace's "Joys." They're efficient and effective, both tracks that dancers could sing along to. Jamie Jones and Darius Syrossian enter the fray with "Rushing" and its audacious vocal sample, Sir James's "Special," from 1990, which has been repurposed for rave classics, house hits and, more recently, Special Request's "Make It Real." The vocal's signature stuttering cadence ("I think I'm rushing, just a little little bit too fast") is a shortcut to an anthem, and "Rushing" feels like a dance music cheat code: some bouncy drums and one of the most recognizable vocals around. It's hard to deny how infectious it is, but that's not because of what Jones or Syrossian add to their sample source's outsized legacy.
