Pretty Sneaky - 5

  • A mysterious label outdoes itself—again.

  • Barely a month after releasing what I called their best record yet, Pretty Sneaky, an excellent late entry in the tradition of mysterious white-label vinyl series, outdid it itself again. 54 having been skipped for now—takes the label's dub-inspired concept in another new and unexpected direction. Last time it was dark and cosmic techno. This time it's a much weirder combination of sounds: fast, thumping, minimal, dubby house with an improbably catchy disco bassline and a smooth, peanut-buttery thickness to its sounds. The A-side (the one with the banana peel on it) is nice too, all pitter-pattering rhythms and humid nighttime atmosphere. That B-side, though, is loopy groove bliss, barely changing over its eight minutes but always ending too soon.
