Mosca - Touchie Riddim

  • A twisted reimagining of the sounds of early grime.

  • Don't let the title fool you—Touchie Riddim is not a riddim. This abstract, four-track EP actually harks back to Mosca's roots in electronic music, inspired by the minimal but heavy sounds of early grime. But Touchie Riddim doesn't sound like early grime. It's "deconstructed club music" that actually sounds deconstructed, immersing the base elements of grime—square wave basslines, sludgy synth patches—in a puddle of mud. Touchie Riddim is split into four parts but there are no conventional tracks. The music sputters, coughs and then lashes out, as if Mosca were forcibly holding the music back before letting it snap like an elastic. It can get uncomfortably heavy, especially part three, which deals mostly in dread and drone. It highlights the sounds of grime in their naked glory, each sub-bass note gloriously low, each whirring synth nearly ear-piercing. It's a love letter to old-school grime that underlines its potential for fierce sonic assault.
