  • For a project that started on a lark—a way for two successful house producers to blow off steam and get out of their heads—Talaboman has proved to be a remarkably sturdy endeavor. John Talabot and Axel Boman's album for R & S, The Night Land, dabbled in ambient, sprawling acid, dub techno and delicate piano house, eschewing each artist's signature sound. Their recent material seems tailored towards the big rooms where they get booked to DJ. "Discodrums" lumbers along at just over 110 BPM. The chugging bass line is pure Talabot, giving both producers a rock-solid foundation to explore the psychedelic scope of their analog synths. The 11-minute track uses subtle LFO modulation and glide to achieve a head trip on the level of Locussolus's "Berghain (Darkroom Mix)." Meanwhile, the B-side, "Flashforward," sounds like what would happen if a dubby post-punk band recalibrated its sound for Room One. Massive stuff.
