- Or:la has caught fire as a DJ over these past couple of years, pretty much playing all over the globe. but that shouldn't distract from the strong (if infrequent) work she's done as a producer. Across three EPs, two of which were for Hotflush, she's charted a slippery style that combines house, techno, electro and bass music but is more coherent and confident than that might sound. This kind of desirable ambiguity never really manifested on Deep Sea Frequency, her label with Breakwave, which leaned on more classic club sounds. But CÉAD, her new venture, so far seems more in keeping with the artistic vision of her own releases, especially if we consider this new one from Blu Terra, a Polish producer who's apparently released music under other aliases.
Like Or:la's releases, it's difficult to pinpoint anything on the Marymont EP that sounds especially novel in isolation, but there's a notably irregular logic behind the tracks' construction. See, for example, the tough, whirlpool-like rhythm of "20,000"; the way the bassline and bitting trance-synth on "Western/Eastern" ricochet off one another; or how "Person Sans" sort of jogs on the spot and eludes convenient comparisons. How memorable these tracks would be in the mix is an open question, but they contribute to the idea that CÉAD is building an identity, even if it's still tough to define.
