Stacey Sexton - Necessary Desire

  • Chunky house music, with a twist.

  • All Centre is one of my favourite labels of 2019. The London platform's global outlook, openness and unpredictability places it somewhere into the experimental club world, but its releases are more welcoming, highlighting melody and harmony over novelty and noise. (Lara Sarkissian's haunting Peninsula is a good example of this balance.) All Centre's latest EP comes from Stacey Sexton, a Toronto producer who makes straightforward house music that's slightly askew. "Necessary Desire" is a chunky four-to-the-floor house track with tantalizing details like an ascending tones and a ghostly, floating bleeps. "M'Excite" has a gentle, garage-inflected shuffle, but you might be distracted by the sleazy moans. Even when using what sounds like porn samples, there's a cerebral touch to Sexton's production that gives her music the X factor that marks All Centre's best records.
